An Appreciation
Popswop Magazine
During the Glam Rock Era of the ‘70’s a new singer appeared for the first time on the UK TV Show 'Top Of The Pops'.
Mean and Moody and Dressed in Black he looked like a ‘50’s Rock n’ Roller with a stance never seen before.........
Who was this unique artist? Alvin Stardust was his name and a new star was born.
See above the opening image of this memorable performance.
A disguised appearance of Alvin Stardust had made an earlier TV appearance on the show 'Lift Off With Ayshea' (GranadaTV) the month before, but the effect wasn't as sensational as the 'Top Of The Pops' appearance.
“My Coo Ca Choo” was the debut single which stormed up the UK chart stalling at the Number 2 spot, the follow up was “Jealous Mind” which topped the chart in 1974. By then I was totally hooked and I've been a fan ever since.
More hits were to follow in the UK and Europe and in the early ‘80’s Alvin enjoyed more success with such classics as “Pretend” and “I Feel Like Buddy Holly”. He also came very close to representing the UK in The Eurovision Song Contest.
Alvin enjoyed a prior career in the ‘60’s as Shane Fenton charting 4 times between 1961 and 1962 recording on the Parlophone label.
Alvin is affectionately known as The Godfather Of British Rock N’ Roll and continued to perform up to the very last week of his life.
He sadly passed away on October 23rd 2014 aged 72, shortly before the release of his latest studio album ‘ALVIN’
This Website is a Personal Appreciation for an entertainer who has stood the test of time and to give me the opportunity to share my collection of Vinyl Records, Cassettes and Cd's. Also included are Magazine Pics, Posters,Clippings etc. many of which have not seen the light of day for over 30 years............
Enjoy .... Regards JJ
